A New Year Means More Ways Than Ever to Surf the Internet on Delta!

Happy New Year everyone! Since my last update, we’ve gone from one lonely Wi-Fi-equipped regional jet to 134 as of today (Jan. 6, 2012). So now you have more opportunities than ever to keep in touch with work, friends and family, update your status on Facebook, flip through your favorite websites and check your flight status on delta.com (and remember, access to delta.com is ALWAYS free).

Delta and Delta Connection by the numbers—some interesting factoids:

  • A majority of Delta’s two-class regional jets are now Wi-Fi-equipped
  • 100% of Delta’s domestic mainline fleet features Wi-Fi
  • 95% of the Delta Connection E170 fleet features Wi-Fi
  • 89% of the Delta Connection CRJ700 fleet features Wi-Fi
  • 39% of the Delta Connection CRJ900 fleet features Wi-Fi
  • 6% of the Delta Connection E175 fleet features Wi-Fi
  • Delta currently operates 576 Wi-Fi-equipped mainline aircraft and 134 Wi-Fi-equipped regional jets
  • The 710 Wi-Fi-equipped Delta & Delta Connection aircraft represent about 50% of the world’s entire Wi-Fi-enabled fleet
  • Delta operates nearly 3,000 daily domestic flights with Wi-Fi; each day nearly 400,000 customers fly on Wi-Fi-equipped Delta planes

Wi-Fi on RJs also means yourDeltaTravelerPassis now a better value than ever, with unlimited access on all Delta & Delta Connection-equipped flights for just $34.95 a month.

As you can imagine, coordinating installations on multiple fleet types across seven different carriers, while maintaining a very busy flight schedule is quite challenging. That said, I want to thank our Engineering team, the Gogo technical teams responsible for the Wi-Fi installations, and our Delta Connection partners for all their work to get this great product onboard. We’re well on our way to completing the entire two-class RJ fleet of 255 aircraft by this spring.

We hope you like the product upgrades we’re rolling out and as always, your feedback is welcomed and encouraged. We’d love to hear from you!

Staying connected (for free) is a holiday gift to you!

Keeping you connected during this busy holiday season is important! That’s why we partnered with eBay and Gogo to bring you 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi on more than 660 mainline and regional aircraft throughout the U.S. this holiday season. That’s enough time to check email, get caught up on your social networks, check the latest bowl game score or let your loved ones know when to pick you up from the airport.

And just in case you didn’t get that perfect gift or manage to find enough time to check off every item on your shopping list, you can shop eBay during your entire flight at no charge for internet access – all from the comfort of your seat. And delta.com is always free so if you need to check your connecting flight or location of your luggage, you can do that too.

All you need to do is open a browser on your laptop, tablet or mobile device, enter your email address in the special eBay promotion on the home page and click the “Give Me Free Wi-Fi” button. That’s it – no catch, no ‘some assembly required’ – and it’s only available on Delta.

Have you tried in-flight Wi-Fi on Delta? Let us know how you like it!

New, Free In-Flight Entertainment Is Here!

Today we’re excited to announce new in-flight entertainment choices like surfing free content on the web, streaming video on your laptop and expanded entertainment options to help make your flight experience even better…and more entertaining! There are a lot of new improvements so let’s dive right in:

Delta Connect

Delta Connect is the new in-flight Wi-Fi page that you’ll use when you’re accessing Gogo, streaming movies and TV on demand from your laptop, browsing free content on the web and accessing other in-flight entertainment systems.

This new page will offer you an expanded range of free content from entertainment and shopping (Gilt.com and OpenTable.com, for example) to flight and destination information like concerts, festivals and events. Look to the right for a preview!

The best part? You don’t have to purchase a Gogo pass to access this free content!

Entertainment On Demand

Now you’ll be able to browse and stream TV and movies using in-flight Wi-Fi, all without purchasing a Gogo pass! Plus, everything you rent in-flight will still be available for you to watch at least 24 hours after your flight lands.

This feature will be available on all 16 of our Boeing 757-300 aircraft to start, and available at an introductory price for TV ($.99) and movies ($3.99). Entertainment on demand will be available for laptops and expanded to tablet and mobile devices by early 2012 on 757-300s.

Airbus A330 In-Flight Entertainment Upgrades

If you’re flying on any of our 32 Airbus A330 aircraft you’ll see a redesigned in-flight entertainment experience with more entertainment choices—150% more movies and television, music and games for you to enjoy!

All of these new options will be completed by the end of 2011, and the improved in-flight entertainment system will expand to all of our 300 aircraft equipped with personal in-flight entertainment by mid-2012.

Let us know what you think of the new changes and we look forward to hearing your feedback!

Wi-Fi Update – The Internet Flies Delta Connection!

We know you’ve been eager for the latest Wi-Fi news so you’ll be happy to know that as summer winds down, Delta’s Wi-Fi installations are ramping up. We’ve been working on this project for months and today I’m excited to announce that our first RJ with Wi-Fi has completed flight tests, received supplemental type certification and enters service today!

Here’s a cool factoid…with today’s introduction of Wi-Fi service aboard a CRJ700 (operated by our friends at ASA), Delta now features the world’s smallest (65-seat CRJ700) and largest (261-seat B767-300) aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi (and everything in between!).

It’s been a dizzying installation pace. We introduced Wi-Fi on a handful of MD88s in December 2008…fast forward to September 2011 and 560+ aircraft are now connected. Looking ahead, we’ll offer Wi-Fi on more than 250 RJs over the next four months. Millions of customers have used inflight Wi-Fi to connect with work, friends and family since its introduction. Going forward, more than 80,000 additional customers every day will have access to the Internet from the sky.

Wi-Fi on RJs also means your Delta Traveler Pass is now a better value than ever, offering nearly 1,000 additional chances to connect in flight every day, once the two-class RJ fleet is complete.

We hope you like the product upgrades we’re rolling out and we’ll continue to provide regular installation updates. As always, your feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Update: Wi-Fi and Flat-Bed Seats

Hello and happy Tuesday to you all! I wanted to provide a quick update on Delta’s ongoing Wi-Fi installations and the status of our flat-bed seat upgrades; two subjects have proven to be very popular with readers of this blog.

Wi-Fi

Delta currently operates 569 Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft. The latest installations include:

767-300

Two domestic 767s (Ships 121 and 124) returned to the fleet from storage and Wi-Fi was installed during their return-to-service visits. The total fleet count is now 16 aircraft (who doesn’t love a widebody on a domestic route!).

MD90

Ship 9224 was added to the fleet May 16. The total MD90 fleet count is now 24.

A319 VIP

Wi-Fi installations are being performed in MSP as part of the transition to a mainline configuration. For most of the year these eight planes are used exclusively for our NBA charters in a VIP configuration. We’ve completed 7 of 8 planes with the last of the A319s scheduled for installation by the end of June.

CRJ700/900

The prototype installation for the CRJ program will be an ASA CRJ700 and is projected to return to service on June 15*. (This will be the first regional jet in the world to be equipped with Wi-Fi!)

Flat-Bed Seats

As of June 30, Delta will operate 40 planes with 180 degree fully flat seats in BusinessElite.

767-300ER (1 of 58 in work) — Ship 1608

767-400ER Fleet Complete (21 of 21)

777-200ER (7 of 8 complete) — Ships 7001-7004, 7006-7008

777-200LR Fleet Complete (10 of 10)

I hope you’re having a great week and keep the questions and comments coming!
