Mod Blog: Winglets and SkyTeam Plane Debut

Activity continues to churn on 1804. Our Flight Test is scheduled for later on this week and we are nearing the end of the modification. We are looking forward to beginning work on the next couple of aircraft. We will have 3 lines of aircraft out at one time with 1 here in Atlanta and 2 in Hong Kong.

Ship 1820, a 767-400 (76C), was the first to receive the SkyTeam Logo paint job. Pictured here, the aircraft will make its formal debut tomorrow morning in Milan.

Winglets continue to be a hot topic. Most of you may have heard, Delta flew its first 76T winglet on 3/21, an out and back to Lagos. Tomorrow, the first 76L, ship 192, will be back from Hong Kong and will be entered into rotations.

Ships 7104 and 7105 have delivered to the fleet with 04 arriving in the morning. Once we complete their PTS mods, we will bring in 7102 to accomplish the +2 J/C seat mod to bring 7101 and 7102 up to 45 B/E seats and standardize with all our remaining deliveries.

Next week resumes our 75E large lav tank mods. We will begin the production run of these aircraft in time for the summer. Headrests will continue to be installed while the SAT COM aircraft will come in toward the end of the production line.

Lastly, we are in the early planning stage of converting 3101-3104 into 3601-3604. We have mid-May tentative cut over date for the first aircraft.

Mod Blog: 767ER Winglets

Hey all, hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. Delta did, especially since it delivered it’s first fully wingletted (is that a word?) aircraft back to the fleet. Ship 1610 pictured below is a 767-300ER (76T) that flew ATL-LOS starting Sunday evening. The winglets increase the wing-span by close to 11’ and the winglets themselves are 11’ in elevation.

Unfortunately due to timing of the mod line vs. the certification completion date, we could not get 1610 painted in the new livery, however we will definitely have at least (2) if not more 767-300ER’s painted and wingletted before the summer season commences.

Switching to Wi-Fi, Chris Babb has been keeping everyone up to speed on tail numbers so I’ll make this brief. As of today we have 72 aircraft in-service with Wi-Fi (66 M88’s).

Lastly, Delta is expecting arrival of two more 777LR aircraft, 7104 and 7105 over the next 8 days. This will allow us to fund ship 7102 into Maintenance to begin it’s +2 mod.

Mod Blog: Delta’s Third LR Takes Flight

Since we last spoke, Delta TechOps has finished several modifications to the fleet including our 75E Large Lav Tank Mod. Ship 6803 was returned to service with her three aft lav tanks increased in size, to help our service during the extended trans-Atlantic flights. Inclusive of that mod, headrests were installed on all coach seating as well as Satellite communication (Sat Com) equipment. All our 75E’s are targeted to receive the LLT mod and headrests by June 1st. Our Sat Com equipment will be deployed on a subset of 8 aircraft to further fund Africa and South America flying.

Speaking of Sat Com, ship 1705 (76L) returned to service with Sat Com fully activated. Over the course of the next several months, Sat Com will be introduced to the remaining 1700-series aircraft.

Ship 7103, Delta’s newest Boeing 777LR delivered to Atlanta on Friday March 6th. She is currently in her prior to service mod and arrived with 45 flat bed Business Elite seats (vs. 43 on our previous two LR’s). Delta plans to retrofit ships 7101 and 7102 in the April/May time frame to add those additional two seats.

You’ll note in this picture, the 6-bunk crew rest for our Flight Attendants. These bunks are located in the crown of the aircraft to maximize main cabin space and provide quality rest accommodations. Delta will take delivery of 7104 and 7105 later on this month so look for all these aircraft to be deployed to Bombay and other markets shortly. More images at our Flickr account here.

On the Wi-Fi side, Delta has 15% of the domestic fleet accomplished. Currently 44 M88’s and 5 757’s are deployed with operational equipment.

Lastly, APB was awarded certification on its 767-300ER winglets and Delta plans to roll the aircraft out on or about the 22nd of March. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of ship 1610 to the fleet especially in the wake of the volatile fuel prices. Delta is on track to have (10) aircraft with winglets within the next 2 months.

Behind the Scenes at Delta’s Flight Sim Tours

I have a friend who does some fun work simulating disasters for hospitals, law enforcement, and the military. I’ll help out from time to time. I’ve been the guy who takes a mass transit train hostage and I’m the guy who the police shoot in some of the firearms training simulators. It can be a lot of fun, but the result is that various groups are prepared for very serious work.

Practice and being prepared is part of safety and safety is priority one. This is something you hear often at Delta. As part of an effort to allow the employees in our area to learn more about other parts of Delta, we recently had a tour of the Flight Simulators and the Flight Attendant training areas where were able to see some of the safety preparedness firsthand.

We were able to visit the Pilot Training Services area which houses the flight simulators. It’s amazing how realistic it is to be sitting in the pilot seat. When you look out the windshield of the plane you see a realistic projection of the concourse building wall and even the breezeway if you lean forward and look to the left. From the outside the simulators look like something out of a good Sci Fi movie and it’s clear the program has the latest technology. The repeated messaged you hear in Pilot Training Services is their commitment to quality and safety with the goal being to provide most time efficient and the maximum hands-on experience for pilots. It’s one of those places where you wish you could hang out all the time.

One of the areas we visited in the Flight Attendant training section had its own simulator where they train flight attendants to evacuate planes quickly and safely. We walked into the simulator, which is a simulated plane on hydraulic lifts, and took our seats just like we would if we were flying somewhere. Once the simulation started, the entire plane moved and sounded like it was taxiing to the runway and taking off. Of course, this being an evacuation simulator, something has to happen to cause the evacuation. I’ll sum it up to say that you’re in the simulator long enough for it to become more real feeling than you would think, the theatrical smoke and lights help, and sliding down the emergency slide was a whole lot of fun. It was a really high energy and fun time,  and the crew got a lot of cheers from our team for being so great.

One of the things I didn’t know until the tour is that we have a team who leases out the flight simulator time for non-Delta pilot training, and the Flight Attendant training is open to the public.

Pilots can rent time in the simulators. If you’re pilot qualified to train in a large jet simulator, here’s the contact info:

As for the Flight Attendant training, there are also a few offerings:

They have a full menu of options for any group needing leadership and professional development/skill building training. Classes include leadership skills, mentoring and coaching, and performance feedback courses for managers. They also offer a great course called “Road Warrior” training, which is designed for the frequent traveler or people who are uneasy with air travel. It was described to me as a great team-building course, where participants learn the ins-and-outs of airline safety, in-flight crew training, travel health, and security.
