Image of the Week: “Widget” Logo Prototype
It’s been 50 years since our ”widget” logo first appeared in advance ads for Delta Royal Jet Service. Below is a rare work-in-progress drawing of the widget by Robert Bragg, a vice president at Delta’s ad agency BDA, who designed the jet logo that evolved into our corporate logo.
The initial idea that sparked Bragg’s design came from Delta’s Richard (Dick) Maurer, Delta senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. In 1955, he noticed a similarity between the Greek letter ‘delta’ and the swept-wing appearance of the new jets seen overhead, and shared his thoughts with Bob Adams, head of Delta’s ad agency. By the early 1960s, the widget had evolved from our first jet service logo into our official corporate logo. Delta’s advertising department described the symbolism of the widget’s colors of red, white, and blue: “Within the strong outline of the triangle, the blue portion points to the sky where we fly—the point represents the pinnacle of professional achievement. Just entering the blue is the swept wing of the jet, represented by the broad white ‘V.’ The flat broad base suggests Delta’s solid foundation. Colored red, it can be regarded not only as the exhaust behind the jet but also the flame of leadership that keeps the point headed upward.”

Update: Flat Bed Seats
We’re excited to finally announce that all 7 of the 767-400ERs scheduled for modification to these new flat bed seats are complete and flying! The 76D model flies all our LHR routes – which means that you can depend on it today to/from ATL, DTW and JFK. MSP-LHR starts tomorrow, September 1st. Plus, it’s also flying between JFK – VCE in September.
The initial feedback we’ve received from customers regarding the seat has been overwhelmingly positive. Most importantly, it’s flat, and that’s the best way to sleep. Beyond that, there are no gymnastics required to get to the aisle. Every seat has direct aisle access, which is a real plus especially when everyone is sleeping. If you’re taller than average, be sure to go for a window seat with an extended console, as they provide a whopping 82” in bed length.
We recognize that the tray-table is challenging to get out and put away. Look for the tray-table instruction card, which should be in the seat-pocket in front of you. For the future, Delta is working with the seat’s manufacturer and another outside engineering firm to build an updated and more intuitive table. The challenge is (look closely when you fly) that we have very little space to work with.

Mod Blog: July Updates
Well its been a little while since our last update. So I’ll start off with some quick facts:
- Our Mainline In-Svc fleet now stands at 759 active aircraft (inclusive of the flying freighters).
- Wi-Fi: 203 A/C
- Winglets: 146 with Blended Winglets
All three of the remaining 76D Flat Bed Mods are in work. Ships 1804,1805, 1807, and 1809 are all currently flying active routes to/from LHR.
We finished up our 777ER +3 Y/C mod at the end of June to bring up the Y/C capacity to 221 pax.
The Soft Goods upgrade to our red-tail fleet is well on track with 30 A/C completed and 52 more A/C with partials. When the summer schedule ramps down, we’ll begin a greater push to have the entire fleet modified quicker.
Lastly, paint-wise, as of July 16, Delta had 262 aircraft painted in the new livery. Broken down to 171 pre-merger DL aircraft and 91 pre-merger NW aircraft.

Mod Blog: Delta’s Third LR Takes Flight
Since we last spoke, Delta TechOps has finished several modifications to the fleet including our 75E Large Lav Tank Mod. Ship 6803 was returned to service with her three aft lav tanks increased in size, to help our service during the extended trans-Atlantic flights. Inclusive of that mod, headrests were installed on all coach seating as well as Satellite communication (Sat Com) equipment. All our 75E’s are targeted to receive the LLT mod and headrests by June 1st. Our Sat Com equipment will be deployed on a subset of 8 aircraft to further fund Africa and South America flying.
Speaking of Sat Com, ship 1705 (76L) returned to service with Sat Com fully activated. Over the course of the next several months, Sat Com will be introduced to the remaining 1700-series aircraft.
Ship 7103, Delta’s newest Boeing 777LR delivered to Atlanta on Friday March 6th. She is currently in her prior to service mod and arrived with 45 flat bed Business Elite seats (vs. 43 on our previous two LR’s). Delta plans to retrofit ships 7101 and 7102 in the April/May time frame to add those additional two seats.
You’ll note in this picture, the 6-bunk crew rest for our Flight Attendants. These bunks are located in the crown of the aircraft to maximize main cabin space and provide quality rest accommodations. Delta will take delivery of 7104 and 7105 later on this month so look for all these aircraft to be deployed to Bombay and other markets shortly. More images at our Flickr account here.
On the Wi-Fi side, Delta has 15% of the domestic fleet accomplished. Currently 44 M88’s and 5 757’s are deployed with operational equipment.
Lastly, APB was awarded certification on its 767-300ER winglets and Delta plans to roll the aircraft out on or about the 22nd of March. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of ship 1610 to the fleet especially in the wake of the volatile fuel prices. Delta is on track to have (10) aircraft with winglets within the next 2 months.
