Back in the summer of 2008 when we launched mobile boarding check-in, it was the industry’s latest and greatest move forward in customer technology. A little more than two years later, we dramatically added to the number of locations globally where you can scan your eBoarding pass on your smartphone.
As a global airline we know how important it is for you to have eBoarding access in international as well as domestic cities. With 52 eBoarding pass enabled cities around the world, now you can travel through 43 cities in the US and nine airports in Europe with an eBoarding pass right from your phone!
We added 24 new eBoarding pass enabled locations since December including:
- Berlin-Tegel, Germany (TXL)
- Charlotte (CLT)
- Des Moines (DSM)
- Dusseldorf, Germany (DUS)
- Fort Myers (RSW)
- Frankfurt, Germany (FRA)
- Grand Rapids (GRR)
- Hartford/Springfield (BDL)
- Jackson Hole (JAC)
- London – Heathrow, United Kingdom (LHR)
- London – Gatwick, United Kingdom (LGW)
- Miami (MIA)
- Milan-Malpensa, Italy (MXP)
- Munich, Germany (MUC)
- New Orleans (MSY)
- Philadelphia (PHL)
- Pisa, Italy (PSA)
- Rome, Italy (FCO)
- St Louis (STL)
- San Antonio (SAT)
- Stuttgart, Germany (STR)
- Tampa (TPA)
- Tulsa (TUL)
- Venice, Italy (VCE)
We’re constantly adding new locations to our list, just visit delta.com/checkin and select the mobile check-in options for all the cities where eBoarding passes are available.
And the mobile upgrades don’t end there! In 2010 we improved mobile.delta.com and launched our popular iPhone and BlackBerry applications, each of which have built in tools that allow you to check-in and access an eBoarding pass from the palm of your hand. Coming soon, we’ll also add our Android app to the mix and continue to add new features to each of our apps in the future.
We’re listening to your feedback and delivering more tools to improve your travel experience and provide hassle-free check-in options. Have you had the chance to use an eBoarding pass recently? We want to know what you think.

LAX and SFO have been listed as “coming soon” for over one year. As someone who originates at those stations quite frequently, what does “soon” mean?

Rick, is FLL on the slate for eBoarding this year? Thank you.

On the Delta iPhone app, I would love it if I could check the status of my flight directly from my itinerary instead of having to memorize the flight number and manually type it into the flight status area.

I just picked up a new Samsung Focus. When will you folks have a Delta app for the Windows Phone 7 platform?

I have a concern on this as I have been checked onto a flight and then had someone else checked in on the same seat. Given me waving my phone and another passenger waving a nice printed at the airport boarding pass, I will always lose. Yes I know it shouldn’t happen but it has happened to me twice.
I know that the gate agent will ALWAYS believe a locally printed boarding pass over anything else.
In another blog on this subject a poster said that they did the phone check in but then printed a duplicate boarding pass at the airport – for this very reason. It also gives a backup for the times when your phone dies for some reason or when TSA are awkward by insisting that your phone goes through the scanner but you must show your boarding pass as you get scanned (back in standard practice at IAD for the last month)
I go through check-in, Security and gates about 4 times a week at both small airports and hubs like ATL. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen people sent back ‘to get a real ticket’ because the scanner doesn’t work on their phone, they’ve lost the picture of the pass or because TSA at that airport or that particular shift won’t accept it. Is it _really_ that much of an advantage over a printed boarding pass?

It is fantastic that you continue to roll out the mobile option, it would be even better if your mobile app would keep up with the changes. Twice now I have checked in for Hartford (BDL) using your Blackberry app and been told that I need to go to a kiosk to get my boarding pass. If I then go to your web-site it will at least allow we to get the pass texted, but that obviously takes away from the benefit of the mobile check-in. Thanks for your help in getting it resolved.

@Nautonnier: Customer Service Agents don’t favor one boarding pass over the other. We have the ability to click on the seat and see who actually belongs there. At times there can be the slight possibility of having a “duplicate seat”, meaning two people have the same seat. This happens with all types of boarding passes. When you board any Delta flight, the gate readers are equipped with receipt printers which almost always print the correct seat assignment should the seat encoded on the barcode you provide is wrong or not matching the seat you have in your passenger name record (PNR). For example, passengers who hold a “Seat Request Card” can board using that and a receipt will print out as they board with their seat assignment on it. Stay tuned, Delta is currently developing a new boarding pass that you’ll be able to use for up to four flight segments… all on one boarding pass.

I agree with the comments above. How is the back up system work if the passenger phones die for some reasons (no battery) or the scanner just does not work.
The check-in kiosk/ counters are usually located far from the gate. And passenger hardly get out after security check-in. I like the idea. But wonder how Delta some small technical problems like that.

Hi all, I’m a retail management student studying under @dr4ward, and we’ve been discussing how new technologies have impacted retail experiences. This kind of technology has been rolled out in many different retail outlets, and it seems to be working pretty well so far. It’s unfortunate that there seems to be so many issues with Delta’s application of this new tech. At what point does it just become a huge hassle? Would it turn customers away if it continually malfunctioned?

@golich17 Yes – I have flown with Delta for more than a decade and a lot of the new advances are excellent. In my case I was first in line on the first flight out and the machine would not read not at all, nothing. This is actually quite common on the first pax onto the flight and the gate agent checked the computer and told me it was OK I could board. As I was settling in my seat the gate agent appeared on the aircraft and told me my seat was allocated to someone else (behind him holding cardboard ticket) and that I would have to leave the aircraft with all my stuff (it was an overbooked flight) and go back to the gate ‘podium’. As it happened they apparently bumped a Delta employee to get me back on. But whatever – a printed at the airport cardboard ticket trumps print at home and smartphone displays every time.
Also unlike a phone, you can carry airport printed boarding passes through the magnetometer for the TSA staff that think you have given away your pass in the 15 paces from when their colleague checked it. (Back in standard practice at IAD).
Perhaps someone from Delta could walk through each step and ensure that these irritants are smoothed out. I and other pax don’t have the time for example to get into one-way discussions with TSA on what is acceptable.

I love checking in on my Delta app and my bags, but you can’t pay for your bags via the app!
The last time I checked a bag (last month), the gate agents were so confused as to why they were checked in but not paid for. I told them I used the app and they asked why I didn’t pay…”Um, because you can’t?” They said that was the first time they heard that out of hundreds of people. Please update the app and train your gate agents (in San Diego so you know). Otherwise, the app is great!

+1 On the request for a Windows Phone 7 App. If you need design guidance check out British Airways App it is awesome. http://www.britishairways.com/travel/windows-7-app/public/en_gb

The eBoarding pass concept is nice if it worked properly. As a platinum flyer, I have tried to use this for the past few years. Not once has is sent the boarding pass to my sprint HTC evo cell phone. I end up emailing it to one of my accounts and using in that manner. Would be nice if we could make it send the pass directly to my mobile device.

Hi,
The last 2 times flying out of ATL, I have been able to check in using the app on my iphone, but then get the message, “Sorry an eboarding pass isn’t available for this flight. Please visit a Delta kiosk to print your boarding pass”. Fortunately, I’ve checked in while still having access to a printer to print my b-pass, but if I was already on the way to the airport, this limitation would have been a hassle. Any idea why I am having this problem? This time it’s flight 1567 to San Diego. Thanks.

I am intermittently experiencing the same error, “Sorry an eboarding pass isn’t available for this flight. Please visit a Delta kiosk to print your boarding pass” for flights out of DCA and ATL. I was able to use the eboarding pass on a flight last week, but it is not working today. I hope Delta’s programmers can fix the bug.
