Seven decades ago this year, a tiny airline moved its headquarters from Monroe, La. to the growing city of Atlanta. Now, Delta is among the world’s largest airlines, and Atlanta has grown into an international city and a global gateway.
Today we hosted an event with more than 2,000 of our employees and closest friends to commemorate this special milestone. One of the highlights was this video featuring three Delta heroes who embody the “Spirit of Atlanta.”
This video is special to us because it reminds us of the huge impact Delta employees have had on our hometown over the last 70 years. Stay tuned for more celebrations throughout the year!

Congrats, Delta! I’ve only logged 1.6 million miles to date, but I share Mr. Robinette’s sentiments. Thanks for taking such good care of me and my family, helping me do business around the country and explore the wide world beyond. I can recall so many experiences over the years and the miles when Delta staff went above and beyond to make my journey simpler, easier, or more pleasant. My most memorable Delta flights? My first flight ever, from JFK to MIA in 1978. My ride on the last scheduled L-1011 Tristar flight, up front from MCO-ATL in August, 2001. ATL-HNL for a business trip in 2006 – the flight that put me over the 1 million mile mark. And last month, flying home from Houston (through Atlanta, of course!) with our newly adopted baby daughter – who already has her SkyMiles account. I am proud to be associated with such a special company and such wonderful folks, and look forward to many more miles together.

Couple of factoids in response to comments above:
1. Check out more video of our Atlanta celebration events on YouTube. Here: http://www.youtube.com/deltaairlines#p/a/u/0/PA1AuaOtZYc and here: http://www.youtube.com/deltaairlines#p/a/u/2/aAsjpzTKz0k.
2. Delta’s official corporate birthday is June 17, 1929 when we flew our first passenger flight from Monroe, La.
3. Anniversary dates for Delta in New York are a bit complicated with all the airlines we’ve acquired. But here’s the scoop:
JFK — May 1957 with Delta DC-7 service
LGA — May 1945 with Northeast Airlines (later acquired by Delta) DC-3 service and with Delta metal in October 1969 with DC-9 aircraft
EWR — May 1946 with Northeast and February 1956 with Delta DC-7s.
If you want to go back even further, Delta’s history in New York dates to 1937 when Pan Am began service to Port Washington, N.Y. Delta acquired many of Pan Am’s employees and routes from New York in 1991.

man i’m 16 and i’ve been through Atlanta i don’t konow how many times. I’ve always flown from Madrid to MKE,ORD,BNA,SEA or SLC and last year on 2009 i took DL127 from MAD to JFK and then to ORD, that flight was cancelled and they treated us soo well that i’m never going to forget that moment. Delta is a wonderfull airline, i always beg my father that buys the tickets to go on Delta because NO AIRLINES IS BETTER THAN THIS ONE AND I’VE TRIED A LOT.
