Daze-Free Days Of Summer

The weather is heating up – and so are the crowds at the airport. So, check out these time-saving travel tips to get to your summer getaway or that all-important business meeting without breaking a sweat.

  • Skip The Lines: Check in online up to 24 hours before departure, from a Web-enabled mobile device in select cities, or by scanning your itinerary at our self-service airport kiosks.
  • Arrive Early: Get to the airport at least 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to domestic departures and 2 hours prior to international flights to meet required check-in times and clear security.
  • Be One With Your Bag : Size up your carry-on bag to ensure it fits our requirements (22″ x 14″ x 9″ with wheels and handles) and review checked baggage rules and fee information. Then, check baggage at the counter or with our Skycaps curbside.
  • Go Over Guidelines For Specialty Travel: Review regulations for children traveling without a parent or guardian and summer restrictions for pet travel.
  • Prep Your Passport & Other Travel Docs: Stay up-to-date on passport and visa requirements, as well as the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Secure Flight program.
  • Speed Through Security: Know the requirements for security checkpoint requirements, pack your 3-ounce containers of liquids in a quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag and read the DOT’s Safe Travel information about traveling with spare batteries.
  • Stay In The Know: Sign up for Delta Messenger and receive real-time flight notifications on schedule changes.

Have a question or need assistance at the airport? Look for one of our Red Coat customer service agents.

80 Years Serving Atlanta!

This week marks 80 years of Delta service to Atlanta, our corporate home and largest operational hub. It all started with trial service on June 12, 1930. Five-passenger Travel Air planes flew one daily nonstop to and from Birmingham, Alabama. Regular service started June 18th.

If you took the Delta morning flight out of Atlanta in 1930, you could reach Birmingham in an hour and a half, and Ft. Worth, Texas, by mid afternoon. The fare to Birmingham cost $9.80 (half as much as railroad fare at the time). For more, check out this Atlanta Journal article describing the new service.

Delta headquarters moved to Atlanta in 1941, and we are the oldest continuous tenant at the Atlanta airport (since 1934). We’ve grown with this “transportation hub” city,  and over the years celebrated many firsts in service here:

  • Early pioneer of the hub-and-spoke air traffic system, starting in Atlanta.
  • First jet service in Atlanta (to New York on September 18, 1959).
  • First service to Europe from Atlanta in 1964, in interchange operations with Pan Am. (Pan Am crews flew the international segments).
  • First nonstop service from Atlanta to California (1961).
  • First nonstop trans-Atlantic service from Atlanta (to London-Gatwick in April 1978).
  • First airline in the world to board one million passengers in one city in one month (in Atlanta in August 1979).
  • First airline to board 2 million passengers in one city in one month (in Atlanta in 1997).
  • First commercial flight to land on the new fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, hailed as “The Most Important Runway in America” when it opened (May 27, 2006).

Congratulations on 80 years of partnership!

A Delta Salute To The ‘Dean of the Civil Rights Movement’- Dr. Joseph Lowery: A Human Rights Icon

With 70,000 worldwide employees and service to more than 350 destinations in nearly 70 countries on six continents, we pride ourselves on being a truly global airline. And as a worldwide leader within our industry, we embrace the cultural diversity of our employees, customers and partners. From the United Negro College Fund to Pride celebrations across the nation, we support various causes in the U.S. and beyond.

In our hometown of Atlanta, we’re a proud sponsor of the Dr. Joseph Lowery Scholarship, a 10-year, $1 million fund that benefits students of Morehouse College. Living up to his nickname as the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement,” Dr. Lowery’s accomplishments as a human rights pioneer span eight decades. He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1957 and served as its President for over twenty (20) years. He also helped organized and lead the Selma to Montgomery Freedom March in 1965, the 1982 pilgrimage to free Maggie Bozeman and Julia Wilder, the “Free South Africa” campaign in 1984 – and the list goes on and on.

Most recently, Dr. Lowery gave the Benediction prayer at the Inauguration of President Barack Obama and shortly thereafter, President Obama awarded him the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the nonviolent human rights advocacy.

We’re honored to salute Dr. Lowery through the scholarship and proud to partner with the Joseph E. Lowery Institute, which strives to bring justice and human rights for all people. It’s a cause that’s near to our hearts, and we hope yours too. Join us by donating to the Joseph E. Lowery Institute today.

Have your travels made you a more diverse person? How?

Wi-Fi: The 500

It’s been a while since the last Wi-Fi update but this one’s a big ‘ol juicy one…let’s call it WI-FI: THE 500. That’s right…this week marks the 500th Wi-Fi installation, a really impressive feat on the part of Delta TechOps, Aircell/Gogo and the installation teams. Since our first installation in December 2008, we’ve been averaging one install about every 1.5 days.

In addition to the 500 installed aircraft, we also have 32 installations that have been partially completed but they’ll require some additional engineering work to find alternate locations for the antennas. Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) amendments are in work and these planes will be routed back for the second phase of installation upon STC issuance. Our Engineering teams are targeting a date later in the summer for the start of the completion line due to FAA approval time and cable lead times.

Questions? Send ‘em my way. I have answers!

Hope you’re enjoying the Wi-Fi!
