Delta Vacation’s Top Dive & Snorkel spots

If you liked reading about our favorite beaches you’ll also like reading about our favorite dive and snorkel spots in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

There are many great places to dive and snorkel, but I was curious to find out some of my colleagues favorite dive and snorkel spots that they have experienced in these popular destinations.

Travel Tips for Diving

Cozumel, Mexico: You can snorkel out front of any hotel in the hotel zone and one of my favorites is the Cozumel Palace. Cozumel has amazing cave diving and wall dives. – David & Wendy

Ambergris Caye, Belize: Amazing colors and so many fish and sharks to see. Our guides caught fresh snapper for us and grilled it for us on the beach! – Sean

Hanalei Bay, Hawaii: This is great for snorkeling with its calm waters and great visibility. – Wendy

Kanapali Beach by Black Rock, Maui: This is great for snorkeling because of the great ocean conditions and the endless white sand. – Libby

Molokini, Maui:
A partially sunken volcanic crater (that looks like a tiny Island) off the coast of Maui is a wonderful snorkeling and diving experience. – Jeannie

Big Island/Kona, Hawaii: You can do night diving with manta rays. Each diver is given an underwater light which attracts plankton. As the manta rays go after the plankton, they glide over and around you in the darkness. – Susan

Grand Cayman, Caribbean
: The water is perfectly clear and warm and the fish are colorful. Also, many dive locations aren’t far from shore, so it doesn’t take long to get to the dive site. – Susan

Xel Ha National Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico: You can see almost every color of the rainbow when snorkeling. It’s a controlled environment so it’s excellent for beginners, yet large and deep enough if you are looking for adventure. – David

West Caicos Walls, Turks & Caicos: This is the best wall diving in the World! The diving conditions are excellent for all levels and the visibility is awesome. A very colorful variety of coral reef and fish. – Missy

Cow and Calf Rocks, US Virgin Islands: This is a great shallow dive, you can swim through natural arches and ledges attached to the reef. – Kathy

Grand Bahama Island: The island is bordered with these reefs, the Wall, the Caves (where a long-ago disaster known as Theo’s Wreck occurred), and Treasure Reef. – Kate

If you know of any other great dive or snorkel spots and would like to share them with us, please send a comment to this post or tweet us @deltablog and let us know your favorite spot!

Calling all Widget Heads!

western-air-force-wants-you-ad

Got your attention, didn’t it? :) Always wanted an excuse to post this Western ad (Western merged with Delta in 1987).

We want your input on the Delta Museum website’s new Delta Aircraft History section! Now under construction, it will feature all aircraft types flown by Delta way back to our crop-dusting days.

We are posting cool facts about Delta planes:  Did you know our first Airbuses were A310s from Pan Am in 1991 (14 leased & 3 owned)? You will see early paint schemes and cabin interiors. We will post links to rare photos and video of Delta aircraft found on other sites.  I am scanning colorful brochures and articles in the company magazine that introduced our new planes and will post them.

What are your favorite little-known facts about Delta’s aircraft?

Any burning questions you’ve always wondered about our planes?

What great videos & unique photos of our planes have you seen on YouTube, airliners.net and other sites?

Look forward to hearing from you!

Documenting Northwest’s Pioneering Service to Asia

Recently made a trip up to former Northwest Airlines headquarters in Minneapolis/St. Paul with Delta Museum Director Tiffany Meng. Side note: It was fun for this native Atlantan to see snow before January – not that we often see it then! We were there to collect some amazing Asian airport facilities drawings, found by Brian Ruppert in Corporate Real Estate, and bring them to Atlanta for preservation in the Delta Archives.

Northwest made the drawings for planning and early operations of its Asian service. I was able to scan some of the smaller ones in-house for you to see: Seoul terminal building 1950 and Shanghai & Manila airport layouts 1946.

nw_survey_flight1947

Another find this year was a rare snapshot from a Northwest survey flight in January 1947 made during preparations for service to Asia. Shown here is Northwest Douglas DC-4 Ship 422 refueling at Chitose Air Base in Hokkaido, Japan. Photo by Clay Tice, Jr., retired USAF colonel, who donated it to Northwest in 1995.

It is a privilege to be able to preserve these records of Northwest’s pioneering work in airline service between the U.S. and Asia. Before Northwest in 1947, no airline flew the chilly, northern “Great Circle” shortcut to Asia. Drawing on wartime experience in the Artic, Northwest flew Douglas DC-4s from Edmonton, Canada, and Anchorage,  Alaska, refueled at the military airfield on Shemya at the tip of the Aleutian Islands, and crossed the Pacific by circling north of the earth’s equator to Tokyo, Shanghai and Manila.  Flying this route–2,000 miles closer to Japan than the warm weather, mid-Pacific route pioneered by Pan Am–Northwest planes could fly Twin Cities to Tokyo in 33 hours.

A special thank you to Blain Peters in Corporate Real Estate – MSP for his work this year to locate historical treasures like these and make sure that they were preserved to share the story of Northwest Airlines.
