Movie Must-Visit: European Vacation

One of my favorite things is being able to watch a movie or TV and say that I have been there. There’s just something about watching Angels and Demons after being in Rome or playing a game of softball on the field from The Field of Dreams in Iowa. There is one movie on my list that is a MUST and that is European Vacation. I never thought it would really be possible but now that I work for a travel company and we are opening up 28 new European destinations (See below) by the end of this month my dream of re-enacting this speech can come true!

Habitat & Delta: Six City Build Kickoff

Today marks the start of Delta’s six city building blitz for Habitat for Humanity. While the airline has been involved with Habitat for a number of years, this is the first time employees from across the nation will be simultaneously building homes in multiple cities, which include Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis, and New York.

Habitat For Humanity’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To accomplish this goal, people of all backgrounds, races and religions are invited to build houses together in partnership with families in need, using volunteer labor and donations of money and materials.

To this end, Delta Air Lines and the Delta Air Lines Foundation have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the six city builds. Over $85,000 of this was raised from Delta’s recycling programs. Perhaps even more important than the monetary donation, however, is the labor provided by the 2200 Delta employees who will donate their time to work along side the future homeowners to build houses over the next several weeks.

“Delta people have a long tradition of supporting the communities where we live and work with more than one million hours of service donated to Habitat for Humanity in the last decade,” said Ed Bastian, president of Delta Air Lines. “We are proud to be an integral part of making affordable, decent housing a reality for many low-income families around the world.”

For more information, visit Habitat for Humanity or if you’d like to support Habitat by donating SkyMiles, please visit our SkyWish site.

Back in Atlanta Again

Welcome to Atlanta…or back to Atlanta! It’s been two months since I’ve been home, and when I’m used to being at my house in Atlanta every night, two months away does seem pretty strange. I’m really looking forward to sleeping in my own bed, sitting on my own couch, and making that routine drive down I-85 to Turner Field.

I was lucky to have an off day to spend in Atlanta before playing a three game series against the Braves Tuesday through Thursday. No set plans for my visit yet, but I’m sure it will include lunch at Chick-fil-a (and who knows, maybe breakfast too!), a little golf at Hawks Ridge, hanging out with my wife Catie and our dogs at home, and visiting my family in Lilburn. I may even find time to do a little shopping for a couple of ATV’s to use down at our family farm during the offseason. Not sure what kind yet, so any suggestions would be great.

It will also be fun to see my former Braves teammates and friends. I’m sure Catie and I will have dinner and catch up with Brian (McCann) and his wife Ashley while we’re in town.

A few days after being traded to the Mets back in July, I traveled with my new club down to Atlanta to take on the Braves. Although I was in enemy colors, I had a great reception from the fans. I’m looking forward to that again.

It won’t be much longer until I’m back in Atlanta for a few months during the offseason. I’ll check back in with you guys soon and fill you in on my plans for the break!

Human Rights Campaign Foundation Award

This week, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) let the world know something each LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) employee at Delta already knew – this is a great place to work!

Through the work of many employees from both pre-merger Delta and pre-merger Northwest, our newly combined airline has aligned all of the right policies, marketing and support for the communities we live in and service to achieve a perfect 100 score on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index and earn the right to proudly proclaim that Delta is one of the Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality in 2010!

Earlier this year Delta supported Pride and Aids Walk events in New York and Minnesota and was one of the leading sponsors of our local Atlanta HRC annual dinner. In May, we were honored to receive the Best Airline award from gay.com members and are working hard this month to win this year’s 2009 TripOut Gay Travel Awards – please vote for us! In October, we look forward to being the presenting sponsor for the 19th Annual Atlanta Aids Walk & 5K Run and a diamond sponsor of the 2009 Atlanta Pride Festival in addition to being a gold level supporter of this year’s Reaching Out MBA Conference being hosted in our hometown. Throughout the year, we offer our LGBT customers delta.com/gaytravel for more information and travel tips to some of the most gay-fabulous destinations in our network.

Being one of the best places to work means more than supporting our communities – it’s the way Delta employees respect one another each and every day. It doesn’t matter if the employee is an executive, pilot, flight attendant, or below-wing employee working on the ramp – we understand that there are a lot of things that we can learn from one another. At the core of our values is a deep commitment to respecting each other and drawing strength from our differences. That is what makes Delta so special and it shows – so yes, for LGBT employees and customers, we are simply the best!

Look Back: SkyMiles Program

Do you remember the original name of our SkyMiles loyalty program? We called it our Frequent Flyer program when we introduced it in 1981 for our “frequent business travelers.”

frequent_flyer_card_on_tray

In 1981, we flew to 81 cities in just 7 countries–including the U.S.  Initially, travel awards could only be used on our routes within the continental U.S. and the Caribbean. The next year, we added the rest of our international cities (all 3 of them!): London, Frankfurt and Montreal.

Alamo Rent A Car and Avis were our first car rental partners in 1982, offering the first opportunity to earn Delta flight award miles other than flying.

In 1984, we expanded the Frequent Flyer program to  include our Delta Connection customers.

Today, as Delta and Northwest Airlines merge into one airline serving 6 continents, we’ve combined the best of our loyal flyers programs—Delta SkyMiles and Northwest WorldPerks® programs—and created the world’s largest -in-class elite loyalty program.  Check out the new enhanced program for 2010.

Happy flying!
