Wow! I can’t believe that in just a few hours several of my Delta colleagues and I—all breast cancer survivors—will be joining Melissa Etheridge on a chartered flight from New York to Washington, DC.

During our flight on Delta’s signature “pink plane”, Melissa, who serves as a Hard Rock International PINKTOBER™ ambassador, will perform an in-flight concert. Just prior to the flight, Delta will help light the JFK air traffic control tower pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month, which begins in October. What an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

As a Delta Flight Attendant based in LAX, I’m personally thrilled to be a part of it. My battle with breast cancer began in 1998 at the age of thirty five. During that time, I took a leave from Delta so that I could undergo treatment, surgeries and radiation therapy. It was a challenging time, but I’m proud to say that I’m winning the fight. I have now been a survivor for ten years as well as having three children post breast cancer and after age thirty-five! I still face additional surgery as procedures have become increasing advanced over the years and I want to take advantage of the many options now available to those diagnosed with breast cancer.

I’m now back at work serving Delta customers from around the world. I’m so proud to be part of a company that has supported me and many other employee survivors while we were fighting our battle with cancer. And, at the same time, is committed to so many fantastic causes and organizations like The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Delta has stepped up to the plate in a big way here and it is admirable to see the efforts put forth for this very worthy cause.

I encourage you to do your exams consistently and mammograms early in life especially if you have a history of breast cancer in your family.
