It’s been a while since our last Wi-Fi update and as we prepare to finish up the 757-200s on the pre-merger Delta side of the airline, we’re gearing up to install Wi-Fi on the 737s and 767s. The Engineering group has also been doing a ton of work on the design reviews for the pre-merger Northwest fleet.
Here’s the latest:
767-300 production starts on 9/19 with A/C 129 and 737-800 production starts on 9/23.
We’ve adjusted the percentage of completed aircraft as we’ve now consolidated the DL and NW fleets. We’ve now completed 235 of 530 domestic mainline aircraft, which brings us to 44.3% of the fleet.
Fleet Deets:
MD88: 117 A/C
MD90: 16 A/C
B737-800: 1 A/C
B757-200: 100 A/C
B767-300: 1 A/C
Pre-merger DL Design Phase:
757-200 ETOPS prototype A/C (6813) is scheduled to induct 9/25.
Pre-merger NW Design Phase:
A319 prototype scheduled for 10/1 in ATL.
A320 prototype scheduled for 10/19 in ATL.
757-3003 prototype scheduled for 11/1 in ATL.
757-200 Critical Design Review scheduled for 9/22 in MSP.
DC9 Critical Design Review scheduled for 10/8 in MSP.
Have a great weekend!

So that means 100% of the M88 & M90 fleet are equipped and ~ 65% of the DL 757 fleet is equipped.
How long is it taking for you to get the 738 and 767 (domestic) fleet equipped? Also are you planning on equipping the 767 (international) fleet as they are seeing some domestic flights as well.

What about the 777LR, they see one or two domestic roots (LAX-ATL)

I just wanted to share that I am most pleased with the Wi-Fi I was able to use it on all three of my legs, (FLL-LGA), (LGA-ATL), (ATL-FLL) recently and it gave me the chance to get a lot of work done and even a few minutes of goof off time. Thanks for bringing technology to the fore front.

Besides the 777LR, what are the plans for the NW 747 equipment? Also, are do your affiliates (Comair/ASA/others) have any wifi plans?

Hi. I was just wondering, what exactly does it mean by “Pre-merger NW Design Phase”? What are you doing to these aircraft? Thanks!
Chris

Chris, sounds great and thanks for the regular updates.
I know that bringing the DL and NW domestic mainline fleet onboard is a huge accomplishment and that you are covered up with just that requirement, however with a considerable number of your domestic flights operated by Airlink or Connection carriers, do you foresee implementing WiFi on them?
My question is similar to airads, but I’m most interested in the mainline-replacement regional fleet composed of the E75 and CR9s as they are taking over a growing number of longer-legged segments throughout the domestic system.

Chris…we expect to have the 737-800 and 767-300 fleets complete later this fall. The international fleet is not scheduled to be equipped at this time.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Darien Red Sox…The international fleet (747-400, 767-300ER, 767-400ER, 777-200ER/LR, A330) is not scheduled to be equipped at this time.

JT…glad you’re using and enjoying the service!
September 21st, 2009 at 4:27 pm
csadlertravel…DL is conducting the design review of all pre-merger NW aircraft, which means Engineers are doing everything that needs to be done prior to installing the Wi-Fi system and ensuring it complies with all FAA and FCC-mandated requirements for the installataion.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:27 pm
BNAtraveler…there are no plans to install the Wi-Fi system on the regional jet fleet at this time.
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Just Curious…how long does it take a plane out of service to equip it with the wifi equipment? Overnight or several days?
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:53 am
rcvideo…the MD90s and MD88s were completed in an overnight. The 757-200s are equipped during two overnight visits.

I hope that the 767 I’m flying from ATL->SFO on October 7 will have wifi. Looks like it’ll be hit or miss at that point.
I’ll add my voice to that of BNAtraveler in hoping that the regional jet fleet will eventually be included in the wifi fit-out. Probably 90% of Delta/NW flights out of my home airport (Manchester, NH) are regional jets, and the MHT->ATL leg would sure go quicker if I could get internet access.
I realize that there are no current plans for wifi in the regional jets (and indeed, corporate structures may make this more difficult). But it never hurts to ask. And ask. And ask.

On a different note, is there anywhere I can find out whether any seats on a given aircraft have power outlets? That is important for the long haul flights that I usually take, where my laptop batteries last for around 2.5 hours out of a 4 or 5-hour flight.
September 25th, 2009 at 12:46 am
rswonger, try seatguru.com
Also, DL/NW only has 2 flights out of 4 from MHT that are on regional jets(only 50% not 90%). The lone ATL flight is operated by a CRJ-700 while the DTW flights are operated by a CRJ-900(has 1st class like mainline) and 2 DC9-30s(mainline jets).

Mike, GREAT progress on the Wi-Fi, it’s an amazing help onboard. Can you get it onto transAtlantic flights for us? Start with ATL-CPH/CPH-ATL, please.
AGREE WITH RSWONGER, WE NEED POWER OUTLETS everywhere. The more GoGo Wi-Fi you can give us, the more we need to stay plugged in. Are more outlets coming? THANKS!
September 26th, 2009 at 1:57 am
Chris: one thing that Virgin America had during their rollout was an icon on their website indicating which aircraft on the schedule had wifi enabled. Any way you can add this icon to delta.com’s flight status listings?
October 1st, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Thanks for the seatguru tip, pilotmoran. I have always used it for general seat qualities, but forgot that it had seat power information.
As for the flights from Manchester, I was recalling the days when there were more flights to Atlanta and when there was service to Cincinnati on Comair. I forgot that was suspended a few years back. As was the MHT->LGA service, unfortunately.

Can we get an update on this, as it has been over a month?
Thanks.
October 31st, 2009 at 11:29 am
I guess October is a “No Update” Month. Some of us really like to know how it’s going!
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 am
Hey Chris! This post is over a month old! Can we please get another update?? Thanks!! (and used Wi-Fi in flight for the first time LAX->PDX. Was great!)
November 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 am
Whoops. JFK-PDX. Arrr. Got my flights confused. LAX->PDX is an AS flight… sorry!
