Greetings from the Customer Experience epicenter of Delta HQ. We’re busy building the world’s largest fleet of Wi-Fi equipped aircraft, and we’re beginning to wonder how you use Gogo.
For many people, the first answer is “work”. Understandable, especially if you’re expensing the cost of that Gogo session on Delta. But we’re not all working on flights, are we? In a poll around the team here, we found that people were reading the news, checking blog postings (ahem), logging in to Facebook, and watching videos on YouTube and Hulu. From personal experience, I can say that in-flight instant messaging is also a good way of passing the time.
So as we move forward in building this product, we’d like to know how you use it. This will help us maximize its utility for you, and might even lead to some creative partnerships. Please click on your favorite Gogo uses below, and feel free to comment with additional ideas.
Thanks! Happy flying,
Mike H.

I would like to try gaming via gogo. The question is whether the latency of the connection will support this use. Gaming of the type I do tends to be low bandwidth but require relatively low latency (no more than, say, 250ms).
The other use not mentioned above is to follow baseball games online. This isn’t quite streaming video, but rather things like the mlb.com gameday application.

I didn’t think about checking the ping. That’s something I’ll do on my next trip and report back, if I remember.
I was able to get on my XM Radio account and listen to music on my last trip from ATL to DCA. It was fine.
Is there a “limiter” of some kind on these wifi equipped aircraft? I’m sure we couldn’t get a few dozen of us doing this type of thing.

I love the wi-fi service, not sure if the price is right but I’m glad the option is there.
One question and one comment.
1) Is wi-fi only for local flights, or is it or will it be available for international flights too?
2) I think it’s time to change the error message on delta.com, specially if you are reaching the site from a Delta plane on the wi-fi. Please forward this blog post to anybody that is in charge of this;

Thanks!

RSwonger,
I’m on a plane right now from ATL to MIA. It appears the server is in Dallas, and my latency on a Dallas server was in the mid 130′s.

I was on a flight from Atlanta to KC and managed to do a 4 way video conference from the plane. I put it up on Youtube if you wanna look.. Just search for Delta and Polycom. You should see it.
Worked fine for me. It’s been a great addition in my opinion… (but doesn’t help me sleep on the plane….)

Love the new pricing options based on length of flight and 24hour option! I have consistently been doing simultaneous internet VC, instant messaging, email and web surfing with minimal latency. Very pleased with this service! keep up the good work!

Thanks for the ping information, JWonser. 130ms is quite outstanding for this kind of service. That would make the GoGo internet perfectly serviceable for gaming, streaming video, or (as another person mentioned) video conferencing. That assumes of course that the connection is relatively stable (low packet loss), but I’m impressed!
