Photo of the Week: Early Red Coats

It’s good to see the Red Coats back and celebrating almost 50 years of special airport service for Delta customers.  We first introduced these special Passenger Service Agents in the early 1960s, and they were quickly nicknamed “Red Coats” for their bright uniform jackets (shown here in this 1970s photo).

I’ve heard though, that the signature red jacket was not always red.  One of our early agents told me that Delta first tested yellow jackets–yellow being the favorite color of C. E. Woolman, Delta’s principal founder and first CEO.  After a couple of months, they were replaced with the now iconic red coat for better visiblity of the agents in airport crowds and to tie in with new Delta’s jet age branding–the red/white/blue Delta widget logo–introduced in 1959.

Do you have a story to share about a Red Coat’s exceptional customer service? I’d love to hear about it and add it to our story collection in the Delta Archives!

Fasten Your Seatbelts New York and Minneapolis – Delta’s Party in the Sky is Taking Off Sunday!

Happy Pride everyone!

This weekend marks Delta’s continuing presence at Pride events held throughout the U.S. Hundreds of Delta employees will participate in New York City’s Heritage of Pride celebration and the Twin Cities Pride celebration in Minneapolis.

And we haven’t forgotten our hometown…Pride events in Atlanta have moved to Halloween weekend this year and Delta will again be an official sponsor.

So, what do we have planned for the big weekend? Delta’s Marketing team, working with several of our agency partners, will ensure the rainbow colors are flying high – along with Delta’s red, white and blue. We’ve got Delta’s classic “MINI Cooper with wings,” tons of great giveaways for the thousands that will be lining the parade route and a seriously tricked-out DJ truck that’ll be playing some of this summer’s hottest dance music.

I’d like to give props to our audio production partner – DMI Music & Media Solutions with consultation from Joel Salkowitz, Program Director of Pulse 87 FM in NYC – for creating an amazing four-hour set that will be sure to keep the energy flowing this weekend.

Some of the standout tracks include:

  • Manny Lehman “Body Rock”
  • Keri Hilson ft. Timbaland “Return the Favor” (Mike Rizzo Funk Generation Club Mix)
  • Ron Reeser - Dan Saenz ft. Myah “Everything”
  • Kaci Battaglia “Crazy Possessive” (Tony Moran & Warren Rigg Club Mix)
  • Pink “Please Don’t Leave Me” (Digital Dog Remix)

Many of the songs from the Pride playlist can currently be heard onboard Delta via the “Party in the Sky” show and this month’s “Delta Pride” show.

As always, we’d love to know what you think of Delta’s onboard entertainment options.

Have a great weekend!

Delta Brings Back Red Coats

Did you see this morning’s USA TODAY article about our Red Coats program? “The scarlet-jacketed (elite) agents returned to New York’s JFK airport last summer and made their debut this month at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson. By summer’s end, 600 agents will be walking the concourses and gate areas of 14 airports, including LAX, Orlando and Washington’s Reagan National…” more…

Our Red Coat agents are selected and trained with exceptional technical and customer service skills to provide on-the-spot resolution of customer issues. You can spot the Red Coat team from their red coats or buttons to identify agents’ special roles on their uniforms. Atlanta alone has an 135-member Red Coat team that’s been in place since the beginning of this month.

Have you spotted a Red Coat in your airport yet? Hope you’ll say hello and give them a smile when you do!

Your Take: Customer Experience Planning & Development

If you’re one of our frequent customers you probably spend a lot of time in one of our airports on your way to your next meeting. And while you were there, have you found yourself thinking “Why can’t I…” or “I wish I could (fill in the blank)”.

Well those are exactly the questions that my colleagues and I on the Customer Experience Planning & Development team ask every day. Even when we travel for fun or work each of us take careful notes about what the experience is like and how we might improve or change it and talk about those ideas as soon as we’re back in the office. What could we do better? How did we do? What worked really well?

So, as you think about the time you spend in an airport, what is important to you? Is it the variety of concessions? The security checkpoint experience (ok, ok, I don’t like taking my shoes off either!)? Checking bags? What should we be thinking about to improve your journey through the airport?
