Earning Miles with Delta and Partners

We all know the benefits of increasing your SkyMiles: award trips, upgrades, you can even donate to charity. But, we would like to hear from you about how you learn about new SkyMiles opportunities.

Everyone knows that travel on Delta or on one of our codeshare partners earns you miles, but how do you learn about the many other ways of earning bonus miles? We have a whole section on delta.com under SkyMiles called “Ways to Earn Miles” where we list all of our SkyMiles partners and what they have to offer; but do you find it helpful? Would you like to see it arranged in a different manner? Would you like notification each time a new partner has been added? What about the Limited Time Offers? Are they easily reached through the website?

Now is the time for you to speak out and offer suggestions about how you would like our website to serve you in earning more SkyMiles. I can’t promise that all the suggestions will be implemented right away but we will be making every effort to make the information more accessible. Just post your suggestions below.

Looking forward to all those great ideas,

New Years Resolutions & Reality TV

Every year I try to come up with a New Year’s resolution like most people. Although I’m not particularly great at following this resolution, I still try to think of something that can better my life a little bit. This year, it’s something weird! I’m going to stop watching reality TV in 2009! I have to admit, this last year I became obsessed with reality TV. I’d watch everything from “American Idol” to “Survivor” and “Amazing Race” (which is sweet) to “Dancing With the Stars.” My wife didn’t help the addiction any because we would talk about the shows and what was going on and, in time, I felt like I was starting to become a person who gossiped a bunch! It just got bad. So in 2009 my resolution is to quit watching reality TV!

When it comes to other TV, I’m still going to watch my favorites. I’m a huge fan of “The Office.” The Office is one of those shows that has so many storylines and plots going at all times, that it never gets old. I mean seriously, every character brings a different element, a different twist and a different level of hilarity to the show. If you’ve ever watched it, you’ll see that very few people in the office have all that much in common and that provides the perfect platform for chaos. And, in all honesty, Michael Scott has got to be one of the greatest characters in television history. He’s so bluntly absurd and hilarious that you can’t help but laugh at him. If you’re not a fan of The Office you need to check it out. I recommend buying a full season and watching it in its entirety on your next Delta flight!

I’m also a big fan of “Entourage.” It’s cool for me to watch because I lived in LA for 4 years and a lot of the places that they visit are familiar to me. I also can’t wait for the new season of “Flight of the Concords.” Those guys are hysterical.

So, as I usher out reality TV in 2009, you better believe that my plate is going to be full with plenty of other TV to watch. Do you have any recommendations for me? Shoot them my way! And for all you people out there who are planning on making resolutions for the New Year, I’d love to hear if you have one that is more absurd than me giving up reality TV. Comment and maybe I’ll remark on it next time.

Traveling Barbecue

Recently the Omnivore sat down at Stamey’s Barbecue in Greensboro, North Carolina, with some really resourceful Birmingham–Southern College students. The four fraternity brothers have figured out a way to get actual course credit for traveling across five states wolfing down ribs, pulled pork, brisket, pork rinds, and some pretty exotic stuff like barbecue spaghetti and barbecue nachos. Learning never tasted so good.

Trying to take notes while talking to four young men who all want to tell you how good the barbecue was in Lexington, North Carolina, at Honey Monk’s, is a little like trying to shake hands with an octopus. “I am here to study barbecue,” said Jeff Vaughan, a business administration major from West Palm Beach, Florida. Or was that Matt Lee, a pre-engineering student from Cullman, Alabama? “It was sort of tough and crunchy on the outside, but sweet and juicy on the inside,” said Art Richey, a poli-sci major from Russellville, Alabama. Will Foster, a business administration major from Alpharetta, Georgia, who had his first taste of pork rinds in the Tar Heel State, said, “My heart said ‘NOOOOOOO,’ but my gut said, ‘yes.’”

These are smart lads, who somehow talked their English instructor into letting them take January off to get a clue about ’cue while posting their results on a Web site. Now why didn’t I think of that when I was in school?

“We’ve gotta do a 10-page paper when we get back,” one of them said. “Writing’s hard,” one of them says, starting a sentence, “sitting down for 30 minutes before I get anything on paper,” another one says, finishing it.

From Greensboro, they headed east to Greenville, North Carolina, where they hope to eat at the legendary B’s Barbecue. Then it’s on to Wilber’s in Goldsboro. In South Carolina, they’re going to try Sweatman’s in Holly Hill.

They’ll be in Georgia this week, hitting Athens, Newnan, Macon and other areas. Then they’re ’Bama bound. They’ll want to know where to go, so contact them via their Web site and give them suggestions.

You know you want to help them all make A’s.
