Green Gift Giving Made Easy

Tis the season to spend most of your paycheck on gifts for friends and family, so here are a few ideas for saving money when wrapping all of your presents. Wrapping paper can often be very expensive, and in some cases can cost more than the gift it is covering. Here are a few creative ways you can save on the wrapping, while at the same time help the environment by recycling old products!

I don’t know about you, but the tables in my house are often piled sky high with all sorts of newspapers. While most of the pages aren’t particularly aesthetically pleasing, there are a few sections (such as the Sunday comics or the food and wine section) which would make very pretty (and very cheap) wrapping material. You can dress it up with ribbons and bows, and in no time you can have a beautiful and recycled wrapping job.

Brown paper grocery bags are well known for their versatility. The great thing about using them as wrapping paper is that you can decorate the paper yourself, or you could have the kids draw on their own designs. Brown paper grocery bags can also be used to wrap those odd shaped presents that are awkward to try and wrap. Place the present inside of the bag and fold down the top. Use a hole puncher to punch two holes through the top of the bag where it is folded and use ribbon to tie it shut. When you’re in the line at the grocery store doing your holiday dinner shopping, simply ask for “Paper, not plastic.”

We would also like to remind you that if you’re traveling with gifts for your friends and family, it’s a good idea to wrap them after you’ve reached your destination. Airport security isn’t too keen on wrapped gifts going through security, so either leave them in your suitcase or bring some brown paper bags along with you to wrap it later.

If anyone has any other cheap and environmentally friendly wrapping tips to add, please post them below!

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season!

Travel Style: Making a Statement

Spendy Wendy has always worn big, glamorous baubles, most of which she found while rummaging through the $1 grab bags in vintage stores. So imagine her glee on discovering that they’re now all the rage; it’s only fitting that we call them “statement jewelry.”

If you’re a bit shy when it comes to making a statement, the holidays are the perfect time to come out of your shell and try on a fabulous pendant or a large bangle. They can turn a blah black outfit into a cocktail stunner. And the best part is that indulging in one simple piece can turn drab to fab without your investing in a whole new outfit. Just remember that one bold statement is enough. The single piece should be the focal point. When you try to combine two or three pieces, the effect can become too costumey. I’m reminded of Alicia Keys’ recent AMA ensemble. The earrings were quite enough, without the snake-like charm dripping onto her forehead.

Banana Republic is doing some delicious sparklies for the holidays. Spendy Wendy loves the large, geometric gemstone necklace, as well as the large beaded necklaces, the latter of which would make Mimi from “The Drew Carey Show” proud. But the beads sure look stunning when paired with Banana’s gorgeous evening dresses.

Packing Tip: Statement pieces are usually too large for the average jewelry roll. To properly pack them, first wrap them in tissue. Rhinestones, crystals and gems can chip and scratch when they rub together, so be careful. Then place them in a velvet pouch and tuck them into the toe of a shoe or boot. That way, they’re not taking up excess space.

For more I’ve-got-personality pieces, check out the interview with the Stiletto King, Stuart Weitzman, in this month’s issue of Sky.

Can you say “juicy red platform sandals”?

Recognizing the Ron Clark Academy: ABC’s Persons of the Week

Delta is proud to be the official airline of the Ron Clark Academy since its beginning. This learning institution combines state of the art facilities with innovative instruction, creative learning experiences and a student/teacher/parent dynamic that is unparalleled.

Recognizing that teaching methods should not be tailored towards a one-size fits all, the curriculum is designed to allow for exploration, curiosity, and out of the box thinking. The learning expands beyond the classroom and through Delta’s sponsorship, students pursue a global education and travel to six continents by the time they leave eighth grade. We take much pride in being a positive force that prepares our youth for a global future.

Last month, the students were named ABC World News with Charles Gibson’s Persons of the Week for doing their part to get out the presidential vote – check out the above video and for more information, visit the official website here.

Congratulations to the Ron Clark Academy!

A Peek Inside the Delta Archives

What does the Delta Archives look like? I’m asked that often, because it’s a space not many people see – even our employees here in Atlanta.   You see the products we support:  exhibits, books, articles, uniform fashion shows, etc.  Also, your reference questions tend to be handled remotely by phone, e-mail and online databases, which is typical in corporate archives.

The Delta Archives is two storage areas, about 10,000 square feet total, housing almost 90 years of records and artifacts.  Here I am holding a 1970s flight attendant coat in our main facility:

Most of the space is full of boxes of paper records, photos and objects.  At left are some of the 50 cabinets housing our 8,000+ uniform pieces.  Hanging above, you see framed posters and paintings of Delta and Western Airlines planes, destinations and people.   At right are films, which have since moved and will go into cold storage soon.  In the background is our reference library of books, magazines and flight schedules.  Our secondary storage space, has oversize objects, like airport gate signage, furniture, airplane seats and other parts.

I hope you enjoyed your “tour”!
