FlyerTalk.com Employee Appreciation Event

On Saturday, December 14, four other agents from the WorldPerks Service Center in Chisholm, MN and I attended an Elite Services employee recognition event sponsored by the FlyerTalk community.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by approximately a dozen “FlyerTalkers” who were there to convey their appreciation to all the agents who take their calls on a daily basis. Time and time again I heard them saying thank you for being efficient, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. To be honest, they couldn’t say enough about the quality service they consistently receive. Some said, “You don’t know how much I depend on my agents”, or “When I have a problem I know where I can call for help.” One man told me how he flies approximately 30 weeks per year and how much he appreciates knowing that we are there when he needs us.

When I reflected on a typical day, I thought about things we all do as agents over and over again—changing reservations or making new ones, assigning seats, checking upgrade space, etc. It is so easy for those duties to seem ordinary, but to our most frequent fliers these things are much more than ordinary. They are things that are part of their daily lives; part of what they do so often – travel. They place a high priority on these things, which is why they value and depend on excellent customer service.

I was struck by how genuinely grateful our members were as they mingled around the room, thanking all of us. It reminded me that what we do (and how we do it) makes a very big difference to them. The message I took away from this event was very clear: our customers are so thankful for the quality service they receive. They depend on us for our assistance and they are looking forward to this same level of service as we integrate our reservations departments at Delta. You can see more pictures from the event here at our Official Flickr photostream.

Thank you all!

Baseball and Check-in Enhancements

One of the great things about working at Delta is the ability to become involved in things outside your standard work role.

While QA of the Self Service Kiosks and delta.com is the daily role my team has, I’ve been able to put on my idea hat to work on the Mets Sky360 Club in Citi Field and the Sky360 Suite in Yankee Stadium. My part in this involves coming up with ideas to showcase delta.com and the Kiosks for visitors to these areas of the stadiums. We’re going to keep the experience evolving, so each time you visit you could see something different.

I have to add the disclaimer that I’m not from the NY area and I’m not invested in any team rivalries. Even if I was, the people we have been working with from both teams have been so great I wouldn’t be able to choose a side. Let me just say that the experience has been great. We’ve had a chance to tour the new spaces and I can tell you that, even with the construction still underway, it is obvious that both spaces are going to be a great way to see a game and check out the latest delta.com enhancements.

There’s been a lot of baseball around the office lately. We recently had a chance to play a game at Turner Field. I have to confess that we were playing softball, there’s nothing like walking up to home plate and looking out at 50 thousand seats as you get ready to bat, even if they are empty. This was something that we don’t get to do often, but you know who does? Medallion members. One of the great things about being a Medallion member is Delta sponsors events like this for our most frequent flyers. It’s a way to say “Thanks for flying Delta“.

Going back to the delta.com world, I wanted to let you know one of the things we’re working on is Check-in Enhancements for delta.com and the Kiosks. We’re going to implement check-in for large groups, make the Kiosks recognize you easier and other ways of getting you checked-in and to the plane faster. You’ll start seeing some of these during the 1st Quarter of next year with more to come.

Breaking News: Delta Unveils a New 747-400 Livery

As a new member of the Delta team, I’m pleased to introduce to you the Boeing 747-400 in the new Delta paint scheme. Ship 6305 is the first of 16 747-400s operated by Northwest Airlines, now a part of Delta, to be rolled out of a hangar in Victorville, CA in the new paint scheme.

Many travelers over the holiday period will be among the first to see the newly painted Delta aircraft as it re-enters service in mid-December.

If you’re a frequent Delta traveler, then the 747-400 may be unfamiliar to you. So allow me to share with you some interesting factoids about the plane, which I’ve been proud to fly for 10 years.

  • Takeoff weight: 870,000 pounds
  • Capacity: 403 customers in a two-class configuration (65 lie-flat business class seats and 338 coach class seats)
  • Speed: 570 miles per hour
  • Range: 8,300 miles
  • Powered by four Pratt Whitney engines – each providing 46,500 pounds of thrust
  • Takeoff speed: 165 mph
  • Landing speed: 145 mph
  • Pilots sit 30 feet above the ground
  • Tail is 62 feet high
  • Its landing gear is comprised of 18 wheels
  • The wingspan exceeds the entire first flight flown by the Wright brothers

The Boeing 747-400 has been a centerpiece of the previous Northwest international fleet, along with the Airbus A330. Now that Northwest is a part of the Delta team, the 747-400 will be soon taking Delta customers to other destinations around the world.

For those with an interest in what goes on “behind the scenes,” you may be interested to know that since Delta’s merger with Northwest in October 2008, both airlines continue to operate under two separate FAA operating certificates. Teams at Delta and Northwest are working diligently to integrate the two airlines’ policies and procedures, leading up to a single operating certificate in about a year from now.

So in the meantime, even though our Boeing 747-400s – along with other aircraft from the previous Northwest fleet – will continue to be painted in Delta colors, they will continue to be flown by Northwest crews under Northwest operating procedures, as part of the Delta team.

For those plane enthusiasts who are interested in everything aviation, you’ll be able to tell what is operated under the Northwest certificate by a label affixed to the side of the plane that reads, “Operated by Northwest Airlines, Inc.” Air Traffic Controllers will also tell us apart when we’re taxiing around airports worldwide with our new FAA call sign that distinguishes Northwest planes “in Delta colors.”

So thanks for letting me share some airplane insight with you today. We hope to see you aboard the Boeing 747-400 – or any other Delta flight – in the very near future!

Now Collecting Southern Airways History

With the Northwest/Delta merger, the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum is working on a new Southern Airways display and collection.  Southern started in Atlanta in 1949, and joined with North Central Airlines to form Republic Airlines in 1979.  Republic merged with Northwest in 1986.

We would like to build an in-depth collection that tells the story of regional airline Southern, its hometown links with Delta and contributions to Northwest.  If you can help with objects, photos/ads or information, I’d love to hear from you.   E-mail: museumarchives.delta@delta.com

Can you help?

Thank you,
