Glad you asked this; my dad's been traveling lately to Bangor and picked me up this issue on his last flight (Delta Sky really is the best!).
I think the best coffee I ever had was during my trip to Costa Rica a couple of summers ago. I used to love Starbucks; after this trip, I refused Starbucks for around 6 months I guess, only because I got better coffee (supposedly from the plantation next door) for a third of the price. Then I ran out of that coffee =/
But honestly, I think it was called "Rey"; I was with a teen adventure tour group, Longacre Expeditions and we all wanted coffee. I got the last 3 bags from the bodega - all different brands. I remember one bag had a tiny hole in it, so I had to stuff it in a Ziploc in a Pringles can for travel. Got some weird looks from the customs agent in ATL on the way home - especially since I was coming from PTY (we flew into San Jose and ended in Panama City).
While on the topic of Panama, they have good coffee too! I forget the brand, but the containers are orange; they had samples in a store and at the hotel. It was also really good, but I still think the Costa Rican beats all others. Last December my family went to Hawaii (no, I'm not spoiled -_-, but HGVC said we could go to Las Vegas or Waikoloa Village, and we had enough Amex miles for 3 of 4 tickets. We did Vegas in 2001 (very hectic year), so what do you think we did?), and we got 100% Kona coffee. Unfortunately, it really wasn't that great. Maybe I just got used to Costa Rican.
Maybe you can help support local businesses in Costa Rica (for example) by serving their coffee on Delta flights. I mean you guys already have good coffee, but make it even better! It was cheap, too.
Okay, I'm done. Maybe I'll submit an article one of these days....
