We recently updated the booking process at delta.com to make your experience purchasing easier. For our SkyMiles Members, you can now purchase immediately after selecting your flights. We’ve even included a link to go ahead and choose your seats then too. If you are purchasing for someone else, want to use other forms of payment, or aren’t quite ready to purchase, you can continue on as you could before. In order for this feature to be available, there are a couple requirements:
- You are traveling alone.
- You need a stored credit card in your profile.
- The billing address for the credit card must be for the United States.
That’s not all though. If you continued on, we’ve added a short form version of your itinerary at the top of the page and the option to choose your seats. When expanded you not only get the full itinerary but a break down of the fees per passenger. After all the billing information, you can purchase trip insurance as well. There are a couple of instances where these new options do not show up:
- You are a Medallion that chose to Review and Purchase instead of using the Purchase Now option.
- There is more than one passenger.
Over the course of the first week, out of all those eligible to purchase right after selecting flights, 25% are using it! An interesting side note is that there wasn’t a single comment at FlyerTalk during that same week in regards to it that I’ve seen.

Quick bug – the option with the credit card shows the first card in the profile, not necessarily the default one. Great enhancement, though

I’ll admit this is cool, and I might consider storing my credit card now so that I can use it. But in the same upgrade, the seat selection went from useful to useless. You now have to answer the exit row questions for EACH LEG instead of just once! And if you select an exit row, answer the questions, and move on to the next leg without saving, your seat requests for the previous leg are lost. Please bring back the old seat selector!

Business as usual must mean something different to Delta. So we would not be adversely affected by the merger? Well, see what happens when your equipment changes on a previously booked future flight and when you try to get an Exit Row seat. You no longer can because Northwest blocked those seats up until 24 hours before the flight, so now Delta.com is doing the same thing. So I lose my Exit Row seat, I am not even notified of the change, and now I have to compete with the 75 other Skymile flyers on my flight to get what I already reserved in the first place.
