With all the children heading back to school recently, here’s a post for the kids. From our “kiddie wings” collection, this is a “Delta Junior Stewardess” pin that was a souvenir for girls traveling on Delta (boys received a Junior Pilot pin).
This pin was donated to the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum by Delta retiree Norbert Raith. It features Delta’s new widget logo, which was introduced in 1959 with our first jet, the Douglas DC-8. An earlier Jr. Stewardess wing in our collections looks just like this one, except it has Delta’s 1940s-1959 Flying D logo instead of the widget.
For families traveling in 1959, the speed of those early jets made the trip much easier. As Delta press release from December 1959, explained: “Traveling with children can be fun if you fly. Luxurious, modern transport planes whisk you to your destination before Junior can tire.”
