Every Mile Matters, Help Us Find a Cure!

Hi everyone,

As you probably already know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What you might not know is how closely dedicated Delta is to several efforts that support The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), and that you can make a difference too.

On September 15th we launched a public promotional campaign where we will donate 250 SkyMiles to BCRF every time a customer checks in online or books a ticket at delta.com. SkyMiles members will also earn 250 miles every time they book a ticket or check in at delta.com, although even non-members can participate as well. If you’re interested, you can read more about it and register at www.delta.com/bcrf. We’re promoting this offer in a lot of channels, but you can help spread the word even more by becoming a fan of our new official Facebook page and encouraging your friends to do the same.

Delta also offers other ways for customers to support breast cancer research, including the sale of pink lemonade on board for $2 a glass (net proceeds benefit BCRF) and the ability for customers to make donations during each flight. And if you do fly during the month of October you’ll probably notice many of our flight attendants dressed to the nines in a brand new, limited-edition Pink Dress patterned after Delta’s signature Richard Tyler-designed Red Dress, as well as in a variety of other pink clothing options with all net proceeds benefiting BCRF.

Finally, also very special and unique this year to help raise awareness is the Oct. 1 kickoff event where employees at Delta and Northwest Airlines who are breast cancer survivors will join together to fly from New York to Minneapolis on Delta’s pink and white Boeing 757 aircraft – a.k.a. “the Pink Plane.” Check back later for more coverage on this as well as for an update on how well our online campaign is doing!

Image of the Week: First Baby Born on a Delta Flight

From the Delta Image Archives, here’s a photo of Suzanne, the first baby born on a Delta flight (in 1959).  Mrs. Hugh Ector, with the assistance of a flight attendant, gave birth to the 8 lb., 4 oz. girl, while in mid-flight over Malden, Missouri, at 9,000 feet.  Flight attendant uniform wings were used as diaper pins.

Mother and baby are shown with Delta personnel about to board their flight home.  You can also see gifts from Delta: an orchid corsage, miniature flight bag and a flight attendant hat.

A New Environmental Liaison

Hello everyone!

For those of you who have been keeping up with Meghan’s posts about environmental sustainability and its importance to the airline industry, I’m sad to say that Meghan has gone back to school and is no longer interning at Delta. On the flip side, I am now working as a co-op here in the Environmental Services department at Delta, and I’ve been given the privilege of keeping up with her blogs. My name is Kelly Stiegel, and I’m a 2nd year Earth and Atmospheric Science major at Georgia Tech. I wouldn’t call myself a true tree-hugger, but I do believe that we as individuals can do our part in order to keep our planet healthy for our kids and grandkids. I drive a hybrid SUV and recycle everything that I can, and I try to encourage others to do the same.

Even though I just started my work here at Delta, I’m already amazed at how much we’re doing in order to mitigate our impact on the environment. From employee and in-flight recycling programs to offering carbon offsets to our customers, Delta has taken leaps and bounds in the past few years towards becoming as environmentally friendly as possible.

I’ll be keeping up with Meghan’s blogs, and I’d definitely love to get as much feedback as I can. An integral part of becoming sustainable is hearing ideas from our customers and others in order provide new ways of protecting the environment. Delta has already taken a huge step in terms of sustainability, but we need your help to find the next way to reduce our footprint!

Looking forward to the next post!

Your Thoughts on the New Boarding Pass?

Hey guys,

So for those of you who have checked-in online recently you may have seen the new boarding pass experience featuring relevant content and offers based on your destination of travel.

You’ll see the weather forecast, local events, restaurants, and other relevant offers.

I worked on this little project with Team Delta earlier this year, and would love to do a little pulse check for your thoughts and feedback.

Talk to me! :)

EATS celebrates its first Birthday!

It’s hard to believe that EATS, our buy onboard program, is one (1) year old. Over the last 12 months, we’ve gone from serving four (4) markets with 26 flights/day to 500+ fights/day in 27 countries. This is all due to our customers! Without the support and feedback on the program to continually improve it, we would not have found such success. Our team is working hard to continue providing quality options at reasonable prices.

In commemoration of the one (1) year anniversary, we have designed an Anniversary Edition menu for the months of September and October. With this menu, we’ve brought back some past favorites like the Chicken Caprese Sandwich, California Salad, and Bagel (this menu’s selection is the Everything Bagel). A little nostalgia’s always good, right?!

I’ve been on the road quite a bit lately. Our team’s been in San Juan, Santo Domingo, Bermuda, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Panama City, and Managua participating in EATS presentations with the local kitchens. There are more cities to visit and more food to select for the upcoming expansion. Other travels have taken me to New York and soon to Salt Lake City and Orlando. Good times!

An exciting announcement which some of you may have heard about already is our partnership with iconic Junior’s Cheesecakes out of New York. Beginning October, we will sell the “little fella” on EATS flights from JFK to select west coast markets. Also, we’re considering boarding them out to ATL and a city in Florida.

We held an event at the flight attendant lounge at JFK a couple of weeks ago where Junior’s supplied six (6) different flavors of cheesecake. Flight attendants sampled each and selected the top three (3) which we’re putting onboard. The order they were selected to appear is:

1. Chocolate Crunch Cheesecake
2. Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake
3. Chocolate Mouse Cheesecake

A funny side note to this…. during our finalization of terms for the partnership, we discovered that the real name for the Chocolate Mouse Cheesecake is “Ebony and Ivory Cheesecake”. I toyed with the idea of a nice little theme for when we board this guy, but figured it best not to push for Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder in the boarding music and play off the theme in the onboard announcement. Oh well, next time….

Take care, and fly safe!
