Favorite Travel Innovations

Do you ever wonder what travel would be like today without iPods, noise-canceling headphones, smart phones and digital cameras (not to mention without kiosks, online check-in, and Delta on Demand)?

After flying four 8+ hour flights this week, I began to realize how grateful I am for these technologies and gadgets.

What is your favorite travel innovation? Flickr for sharing trip pics? Mobile Mapquest? Add it to the list!

Eco-Delta Series: Commute Options

July 17th marked the first bi-annual Commuter Fair at Delta’s General Offices in Atlanta. With over 200 employees in attendance, representatives from the Hartsfield Area Transportation Management Authority (HATMA) and the Clean Air Campaign (CAC) were quite busy.

The CAC’s mission is to motivate Georgians to take action to improve air quality and reduce traffic congestion. They provided information on local air quality and the environmental benefits of commuting. HATMA provided Delta specific information on commute incentives and how to sign up for commuter rewards on their website.

Attendees were also granted the opportunity to sign up for the One Ton Challenge. CAC and the region’s transportation management association, HATMA, are teaming up to get Mother Earth on track to better health. The One Ton Challenge is a regional effort to encourage everyone to use a commute alternative. By not driving just one day per week, each metro Atlanta commuter can avoid emitting one ton of pollutants into the air over a course of one year.

Small changes can make a ‘ton’ of differences:

  • 1 mile driven= 1 pound of air pollution
  • 40 miles driven (the average metro commuter’s daily round trip) = 40 pounds of pollution
  • 40 pounds of pollution x 52 days (one day per week for a year) = 2,080 pounds (1 ton) of pollution you can keep out of our air by clean commuting

When commuters sign up for the Challenge they are entered into a drawing to win a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid from the CAC, Star 94 and Honda Carland.

If you live in Atlanta, visit the CAC, or your local TMA, for information on Commuter Rewards. And for those who live elsewhere, please consider your commute options and drive responsibly.

Try and Catch Us

So on July 16th we updated the booking path on the website to improve the performance of the site. Those of us that worked on the project have anxiously awaited the results. Now that we have the official report, I’d like to announce that delta.com is the fastest Web site for flight searches out of the seventeen airline and online travel agency sites measured.

Unfortunately, we can’t publish the report, so for now go to Benchmark Report Methodology. Presently we are just below average. When the August numbers come out, I expect we will be number one.

Have you noticed the improvements?

Image of the Week: 1930s Delta Ad

Isn’t this ad a beauty? You can feel that 1936 Lockheed 10 Electra zipping across Delta’s Trans-Southern Route from Ft. Worth, Texas, to Charleston, South Carolina.

This ad is the latest donation to the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum, and I couldn’t believe it when I saw it! It’s in color, great condition and from the 1930s – don’t see that very often. Before this donation, we had only 5 color Delta ads from the 1930s. Now we have 6, thanks to retired Delta mechanic Robert “Bob” Walker, who by the way, used to work in the aircraft maintenance hangers that now house the Delta Museum.

Bob brought the ad in last week, and told me all about rescuing it from the trash after a Delta department decided to do some spring cleaning one day. Thank you, Bob!

The ad is painted on cardstock, and has a folding hinge on back to position it upright. It was intended for display on an airport ticket counter, hotel counter or tabletop.

Enjoy!

Notice Anything Different at your Kiosk this Morning?

Today our self-service team began testing our redesigned kiosk application in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York-JFK. Stay tuned for a full recap of the test from Mark in the coming weeks (you might remember he first gave you a sneak peek at the redesign back in March).

You can also read more about our “faster, friendlier” new kiosks from the Atlanta Journal Constitution here. One of my favorite new features is the ability to find out weather in your destination (see the screenshot below) while your passes print! To learn more about how to check in for your next flight from one of our self service kiosks visit this link at delta.com.

Did you check-in on a new Delta kiosk today? Share your experience with us!
