Crown Room Club: Spring Changes

As many of you know (our customers who will be directly affected were contacted last week) in an effort to manage costs in light of record fuel prices, we’ve made the prudent business decision to close several of our secondary Crown Room Club locations at the end of this month. You can find a full list of updated locations here. At this time we will also be converting our BusinessElite lounges in Atlanta and New York-JFK into Crown Room Clubs to further streamline our efforts in these markets. Our international premium passengers will continue to enjoy BusinessElite-like amenities, including pre-flight appetizers, in these facilities.

Delta’s Crown Room Club product continues to be a major focus for us as we strive to provide our customers with a premium travel experience. You can count on receiving the same quality experience in our other clubs that you’ve come to expect. These changes are designed to strengthen our overall portfolio as one of the broadest airport lounge networks in the world.

Our members currently gain access to nearly 100 lounges through Delta’s own Crown Room Clubs and those of our SkyTeam® partners worldwide.

Later this year, we will open newly constructed facilities in Jacksonville, Miami, and Raleigh-Durham. We’re certain you will notice the upgrade to the lounge experience we provide in each of these markets. Our MIA location has been designed with the Miami scene in mind, including custom Maurice Villency furniture. Look for its opening, as well as the opening of JAX, this summer. RDU will open later this year.

Remaking the In-flight Safety Video (Part 2)

Hello everyone!

Just a quick note to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Delta’s new safety video.

No one could have anticipated the reaction or the level of interest from our customers and the media. After hitting our blog, YouTube, and FlyerTalk, the Associated Press picked up the story of “Deltalina” and the buzz began. The amount of viewers worldwide has more than doubled since our last update, now with over 800,000 views! This version is currently being rolled out to our fleet during April and May and will be completed by June 1st.

Delta Air Lines Safety Video Shoot

Filming took place in January at Delta’s World Headquarters in Atlanta. Our director and production company oversaw more than 100 people involved in the shoot, from extras to engineers, make-up teams to mechanics. And as I mentioned before, the participants in the video are real Delta employees. This saved our budget, and allowed us to feature our greatest assets - our people.

Here are a few behind the scenes images from the shoot. If you dig a little and look closely, you’ll find a sign on the wall at the hangar where we filmed. It reads, “PAINT DEPARTMENT, STAFFED BY PROUD DELTA EMPLOYEES.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Picture of the Week: Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Here at Delta we’re very proud of our 78 year history. Our Archives hold a treasure trove of interesting images and photos from almost 80 years of passenger service so I’ll start regularly sharing some with you that catch my eye. Who knows — you might recognize yourself or someone you know! If you do, let me know, and I’ll add that name to our image records.

The photo below makes me think of Spring. Four Delta flight attendants, sometime in 1970-1973, are putting kites together at Stone Mountain Park, a favorite leisure destination here in Atlanta.

Kites at Stone Mountain, 1970s

A piece of paper, glued to the back of the original photo, reads: “The Western Hemisphere’s largest exposed mass of granite is Georgia’s Stone Mountain. Standing some 600 feet above the surrounding terrain, the mountain recently attracted teams of kite flyers who had a try at breaking the world’s endurance record for keeping a kite in the air. No records were broken as the strong winds soon smashed the kites against the mountain. But far below, at the mountain base, the winds were kinder and four Delta stewardesses assembled kites they later used to publicize the event. From left to right: Evelyn Lee, Donna Wilkinson, Susan Williams, Vivian Herren.”

I don’t have an exact date for the photo, but the flight attendants’ uniforms were worn 1970-1973. Isn’t this a memorable uniform with those tunics and Delta logo belts? You can see why we’ve nicknamed it the “Star Trek” uniform. This was Delta’s first mix-and-match uniform. It came in shades of navy blue, orange and white–all 100% polyester double-knit pieces. It was also the first to offer a pants option and not require a hat.

April is National Kite Month in the U.S. - so let’s celebrate and go fly a kite! Hopefully, we’ll have better luck than those endurance kite fliers did.

Hope you enjoy our historical photos as much as I do!
