Recycling: Beyond our aircraft doors

With your help in 2007, Delta became the first US airline to launch a comprehensive recycling program. Since that time, we have saved roughly 192 trees, recycled more than 16 tons of newsprint, and recycled enough aluminum cans to build a Boeing 747!

In 2008, we’ve been expanding our on board recycling and implementing even more great programs. Take a look:

Make A Difference

We’ve expanded our In-Flight Recycling Program

To date we’ve implemented recycling programs in over a dozen cities including Cleveland, Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Orlando, Portland, Salt Lake City and Seattle, and will continue to expand throughout the year.

We’ve added a dedicated Employee Recycling Center (ERC)

The ERC is located at our World Headquarters in Atlanta and is currently open each Friday, giving employees the opportunity to recycle their materials from home. Our “Green Team” collects and manages mixed paper (cardboard, paperboard, junk-mail, magazines/newspapers and phone books), plastics #1 and #2 and tin/aluminum cans. In just the first four months, the ERC has recycled 37 tons of material (predominantly mixed paper).

We’ve added an Aircraft Carpet Recycling Program

A bonus to implementing the In-Flight Recycling program was greater visibility into the types of trash we generate. One of the more interesting materials was carpet. It turns out that Delta purchases a significant amount of carpet each year to install on board our aircraft. In partnership with Mohawk Aviation Carpet, Delta has implemented a permanent aircraft carpet recovery program. Worn out aircraft carpet is no longer destined for the landfill! Our first shipment went to Mohawk’s recycling/reclamation facility last week. I’ll keep you posted on how things went.

We’ve added an Office Paper Recycling Program

On February 11th of this year we implemented an office paper recycling program at our World Headquarters. Office paper collected from desk-side containers, by our Green Team, is now transported to a designated compactor located at the ERC. In designing the ERC we considered how best to capture work AND home recyclables.

We also have Delta offices across the country who have been recycling office materials (paper/cans/bottles) for quite some time. I’ll share their recycling success stories next time!

Premiere: “Pinball” SkyMiles Onboard Video

Being in the SkyMiles department I get to work on a lot of interesting projects (let me answer your question in advance but sorry – I can’t upgrade your status), and I’m very excited to share a piece of my work here with you. I’m making my initial appearance on the Delta blog to share with you our first-ever onboard video promoting our industry-leading frequent flyer program (Awarded Best Frequent Flyer Program in 2007 by Business Traveler and Executive Travel Magazines).

This video will launch April 1st on our airplanes, but you are getting a sneak peek!

Get ready to jump into a virtual Pinball game as you spend the next :47 seconds viewing some highlights of the SkyMiles program. It’s even okay if you don’t have your sound turned on – this video was designed keeping in mind that many of our customers onboard may not have their headsets plugged in.

After you take a look, I’d love to hear what you think! (And be sure to be on the lookout for this video on your next Delta flight.)

Thanks,
Frances

Shanghai, Oriental Setting

After working with Delta for 10 years and visiting over 30 countries, I have my travel style down to a science.

For me, the thrill of visiting a different country is all about spontaneously discovering the culture, stumbling across unexpected places, and most importantly, the people watching!

On this trip to Shanghai I’ll show you some of my favorite places, including where to dissolve jet lag with a massage, visit a 150 year old tea house, sample delicious street food and enjoy an exciting acrobatics show. And, if you are a shopper, you won’t want to miss the Chi Pu Lo market.

With Delta’s expanding international network, your trip to China is about to get a whole lot easier. On March 30th Delta will begin new daily non-stop service from Atlanta to Shanghai. Plan a trip now!

What are YOUR travel tips for this bustling city? (Extra points if you can name the Murry Head song reference in the title.)

I’ll see you in the sky!

Wedding Season, Oh the Places You Will Go

Ah, Spring. The familiar feeling of love is circling in the air. Considering a proposal to your one-and-only this year? Maybe you should be.

According to TheKnot.com’s Wedding Trends for 2008, the latest craze in wedding travel this year will be one any aspiring world traveler can support, Honeymoon Hopping! Loosely defined as visiting two or three destinations instead of just one, this trip promises to be even better than your reception after-party, and a perfect excuse to delay dinner with the new in-laws.

Hawaii

What are your favorite Honeymoon destinations? (I’ve included one of my favorite images of Hawaii above to inspire you)

Amsterdam: Peak Bloom Time Coming Soon

Hartelijk Welkom in Amsterdam Dames en Heren (”Welcome to Amsterdam Ladies and Gentlemen!“)

As a flight attendant with family ties to The Netherlands, it’s often you’ll find me walking and biking around the incredible city of Amsterdam. And while anyone can tell you stories about the famous wooden shoes, old world windmills, delicious Old Amsterdam cheeses and Dutch charm, I’d like to share a few of my off the beaten path favorites to eat, try, and enjoy during your next trip.

My favorite time to visit is during the spring, the prettiest time of year to explore Amsterdam and the town of Lisse, a short distance away. Here you’ll find my all-time favorite site, the world famous Keukenhof Gardens, which boasts beautiful tulips and bulb flower gardens. Peak bloom time is from mid-to-late April.

Have you visited Amsterdam? Share your experience and favorite tips in the comments below OR ask me questions about getting around in the city!

Tot ziens!

Perry

Flight Attendant – ATL based

P.S. Just saw that flights to Amsterdam are on sale until March 11. To avoid missing this year’s blooms book a flight soon! And remember to watch out for the bikes!
